les fleurs

from one of the emails i sent to elfie:
“i was waiting for the bus to go home, standing at a weird spot vaguely near the bus stop because that was the spot with the most sunshine.. and suddenly weifen came around the distant corner on her bicycle and shouted “DES!!! YOU GOT FLOWERS!!!” and i was like “WHAT??” and she shouted again “YOU GOT FLAH-WERS!” and i said “ME?!?!?” and she nodded and rode off to school”

yesterday was one of the best days ever because it was wednesday and wednesdays are free pie days (i had pie twice, again) and because elfie sent me flowers! :D and because it was one of the most gorgeous cycles home i’ve had here. receiving flowers is always nice… but it’s extra special when you’re waaay over the ocean and you receive probably the only live thing someone could possibly send over such a long distance without having to buy an air ticket. plus it looks and smells so pretty! it was a bouquet of roses and chrysanthemum and myrtle and ruscus..mmm. it’s been a day and i’m still smiling from it (: pictures of les fleurs below!

one day to a month

weifen's serendipitous picture of our home away from home

weifen's serendipitous picture of our home away from home

Come tomorrow, it will have been exactly one month since i’ve been in america! any idea how FAST that is?? in the past month i’ve been to San Francisco 3 times, Tahoe once but didn’t ski/tube (though i will be going skiing this saturday!), stepped into nevada for a strollaround, and sacramento a couple of times. It seems like i’ve been so busy having to wake up at 6/7am every morning from mondays to thursdays.. and not getting much sleep on weekends since we’ve been going to san francisco almost every weekend.. leaving only fridays for me to sleep in (thank goodness). I know i’ve said this tons of times but i WILL make sure i get to sleep in more next quarter. Maybe one of these weekends i’ll spend just cycling (or biking, as they say here) to the farmer’s market, trying and buying groceries.. sit under the sun somewhere sipping apple juice and people watching… reading a book or learning spanish. and then maybe try out the sushi buffet (however sub-standard people say davis sushi is!).. go catch a film screening at the varsity… and head home to cook a yum dinner (: OHH.. chelsea says there’s hotpot somewhere downtown! we should be trying that out soon..

so this weekend, weifen’s classmate, sherry and her friends avani and calvin, drove us all in a mad, swerving, bollywood jingle-blasting, head-bobbing vehicle to take the BART into SF, which is cheaper than amtrak. it ended up being just one of those unexpected blasts you have when you don’t realise it until you’re having so much fun and making so much noise that even the waitress at a hulabaloo chinese eatery comes over to tell you to keep it down. all thanks to the skillful partnership of sherry’s printed list of shops and restaurants and manu’s phone’s GPS function, our afternoon was jam-packed with dimsum takeaways and long long long eggtart queues and fortune cookie factory in a strange alleyway and vegan chinese food (for avani) and at the very end, boba tea (bubble tea). we met up with ben mid-adventure.. and after we sent avani, sherry and calvin off, we headed back to manu’s where we spent most of the night having wine & bak kwa!!! too bad i hadn’t bought more of it.. we polished everything :( went out in the middle of the night for a huge pizza treat.. and then went to bed. oh the glory. and then as if all that indulgent chinese new year feasting wasn’t enough, we had to go out and eat disgustingly delicious (and entertaining) japanese teppanyaki in japantown the next afternoon right before weifen and i hopped onto the BART to richmond to catch the amtrak. we were supposed to take neoprints at this neoprint “complex” in japan centre but we forgot in the end.. poo.

well.. bad news is, after that exhausting weekend, i dragged my crazy-haired, barely opened-eyes self out of bed at 5am on monday morning to wish my family happy new year but my mom’s first words were “AYOH you look so terrible!”. yes happy new year to you too mother. i went back to bed, not feeling very happy at all, and couldn’t get back up for my 8am drama class.

that’s enough of that. TIME FOR PICTURES!!!!!

we’re not homeless, just far away from home.

i had my first midterm today.. can you believe it. shanny’s only just reached france, kim hasn’t even left for milan, and i’ve had my first midterm. bollocks!!!! anyway, i shouldn’t get too stressed out, but there is tons to do. i will NOT have 4 early morning classes a week next quarter, i will not! so anyway, today was the astronomy midterm and we had to buy our own scantron (which is like the bubble shading form in singapore) from the bookstore for 15 cents each.. funny. i bought a “good luck test uc davis pencil” to go along..hope it worked. and when i handed in my paper, he actually remembered my name! full name some more. i heard him call others by name too.. this crazy person actually remembered everyone’s name. he passed a camera and paper around the lecture hall one day and told everyone to take a picture of themselves and write their names on the paper indicating a distinguishing characteristic (e.g. pink hair) so he could match the names to the faces and learn everyone’s names. and during the review session late last night, he gave everyone cookies. i saw him at the crepe place today in silo.. he’s the jolliest!

so i haven’t blogged for so long again because i’ve been caught up with school and going to san francisco where we crashed at manu’s and spent 3 glorious un-touristy days doing everything from watching stand-up comedy to going to fisherman’s wharf (i could never get tired of that place) to watching a foreign film (waltz with bashir) to eating late night pizza and talking into morning over moscato. we made a friend in a famous yogi master on the train ride back. he was headed to davis too, after some book tour in san francisco. name’s duncan wong and he says he’s taught in singapore before.. mister wong with the falafel and prada wallet.

i’ve got a bike! a reddish mongoose that i found n craigs list for $50 (: it came with both front and back lights and he was nice enough to meet up with me the day after i collected the bike to put in a basket for me! very nice man eric with braces, who works downtown and doesn’t speak very good english. i wonder where he’s from.. i’ll take a picture of it soon! cycling to school is splendid when the weather’s nice.. if its too cold you get frozen face + mucusy nose when you stop cycling. the hot spell has officially passed in davis and now its back to around 10 degrees c on average, and rainy :(

watched slumdog millionaire at the varsity theatre last night, and it is absolutely my favourite film as of this moment. i hihihighly recommend everyone to watch it! the next film showing at the varsity is revolutionary road and i’m definitely catching that. was looking at their website.. there’s going to be a davis film festival sometime in may around my birthday woopeee!

i’m just thinking up random incidents that happened over the past week or so that i might have forgotten about.. there was yesterday when i had pie twice at baker’s square (it was free pie day you see), once after drama with mike, julio and jaz (pecan pie and coffee) and the second time i met weifen and jeremy there before going to catch slumdog millionaire (cup of italian wedding soup and lemon meringue).

oh i love free pie wednesdays.
also i bought 6 reese’s chocolate bars because it was buy 3 get 3 free. HAHA!

O-KAY! picture time.. more to come soon! *flying kiss*

i’m home on a 3 hour break before astrology.. and on the bus ride back it occured to me that i’m quite happy now! yesterday while lying on the grass at the arboretum i realised that at that point of time, there was no place else i’d rather be than where i was, on the grass in the sun by the ducks wearing blue tights and a sweatshirt. its a nice feeling to have, and a rare one where i grew up.  on the bus i was reading bridge to terabithia, one of the books elfie gave me for my birthday, and i was sitting by the window with the sunshine pouring into the bus like streams of WARM BUTTER and it felt like i could stay on the bus forever, which lasted only 8 minutes till i got home. i’ve a new friend in the crepes chef at the silo who insists on speaking french with me everytime he sees me ever since he found out i could speak it. he said today that he’ll put a sheet of paper up at the cashier for people who know how to speak french or want to practise speaking it to write their names and contact each other. hahaha! and he gave me an extra stamp on the frequent crepe eaters reward card as “extra incentive” to keep coming back. ahaha.

i kept falling asleep during foodscience today.. and i have several ink stains on my notebook to prove it. but the sunshine that greeted me when i emerged from the sleepy hall was enough to wake me (: so i got tea and sat out in the sun.. made friends with this girl vanessa. at first i was curious at what she was writing in her little notebook, which turned out to be her record of what she eats each day. and then she took out a textbook (our sexuality). so i started talking to her, and reading the california aggie with strong resistance by the wind, and squeezing 2 packets of honey into my breakfast tea. i must, must say.. walking/lying in the sunshine here has got to be one of the most comfortable things i’ve ever done in my life (: i can be seen crossing a street several times just to walk on the side that isn’t in the shade. i think i shall go get myself a little mat so i can go to the arboretum for some sunning more often.

last night i had the most amazing pie.. lemon supreme and french apple (: (: (: every wednesday’s free pie day at baker’s square.. and that’s where you’ll find me. probably. and tonight we’re meeting chelsea and amy at pluto’s for dinner.. its a salad place i heard. to think i was never a believer that salad could be a meal till now.

think i shall go to this cafe called common grounds across the street now to observe a stranger and get that journal assignment done before san francisco this weekend! toodles friends, i miss you!

p.s. “SHRIMP” just doesn’t sound as delicious as “PRAWNS”!!!! come on america!

no takashimaya

January 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

weifen and i experienced out first lucky day with the local bus service on saturday. for once, we didn’t miss any buses, got all the stops right and found what we were looking for (: good times. that was pretty much an adventure on its own.. but other than that, i got my comforter (at last!) from ikea and we had a mini shopping spree.. worth 2 hours in forever 21. hahaaa! came halfway around the world to shop at a store that’s in singapore. no but it was a manifestation of the 2 week long deprivation of malls, i guess. not that we shop every fortnight in singapore, but just the lack of any sign of mall-dom did something to our system. HOW PATHETIC we are!!!! perhaps malls are evil after all. take that TAKASHIMAYA! i will try to seek refuge in the farmer’s market instead! *tightens belt*

speaking of which, the davis farmer’s market is absolutely darling. i didn’t take any pictures of it partly because my hands had to be in my pockets because of the cold, and also because i was busy sampling food and petting puppies. they sold everything from gigantic, gleaming strawberries to organic cotton baby onesies to freshly-squeezed, raw AWESOME apple juice, to veggies and sweet potatoes and nuts and CRAZY good baked goods and bread and PUPPIES (: (: i would’ve bought a whole lot of groceries to experiment cooking with if not for the fact that we had to bus to sacramento after that so i didnt want to lug everything around town with me. i’ll go back next week.. and perhaps take some photos. (: can’t wait for spring when they’ll have it every wednesday too..

i tried making baked sweet potato/yam fries last night, inspired by new year’s dinner at owen’s. but it turned out a little too soggy i think because i added too much olive oil.. but still tasty! will buy a piece of salmon from the farmer’s market on saturday to try out mother aggie’s recipe! i realise.. that i actually LIKE to cook. actually i sort of knew that before but we didnt have an oven at home and i always felt so sluggish at home..haha. maybe davis will make a cooktress out of me hmmm.

saturday was sure packed.. the minute we came home from a long day of farmer’s marketing and sacramento shopping, lauren, rochelle and annie invited us to a house party that they were going to so being tired but forever never too tired in america, we went! it was eye opening fun, as all parties have been this year for me, and i can’t help but feel as if i’ve been transported into a scene in a movie from time to time. surrreaaal. okay but enough about parties, looking forward for more to come! (: (:

our first assignment for acting class… is to observe a stranger for at least half an hour. and writing a paper on our observation… it could be anything from how we felt when we were observing them, to what we observed about them, to what we imagined their lives were like. as some say here, i’m STOKED. hahaha. who knew assignments could actually be fun. gives me HOPE! (hope is actually the acting teacher’s name.)

i’m going to learn korean from this girl called marie park, for free! some international thingamabob. so far im her only student, she says.. but i hope more people join us. korean tuition. hee hee.

i’m so full from the chicken and steak burrito i just ate at chipotle’s with rochelle and weifen. so yummy though. ohh the weather today was the warmest its ever been since we arrived.. i think it was 17 degrees celcius! though my skin has lost its sensory memory of what singapore weather REALLY feels like, it sure FELT like singapore on a cool day. (although i know singapore is NEVER 17 degrees c.) i didnt even wear a jacket/coat around all day. PLEASE let tomorrow be like this too… i’m going to bring my camera out and snap pictures of people laying out and playing frisbee in the quad (:

psssst.. i MAY be going to hawaii for spring break!!! :D

distance to the sun

January 8, 2009 · 1 Comment

SO! monday was the first day of the winter quarter here at davis and i haven’t been blogging because there’s just been so much to do.. finding my way around campus to all my classes which are scattered all around campus, learning how to use their version of the ivle (called smartsite), finding out which textbooks are required and which arent and where to get them from (and fretting over how expensive they are), getting used to the bus system, meeting up with the other singaporean exchange students, meeting up with our EAP buddies, spending free between-classes time strolling around downtown (i watched milk on tuesday during my 6-hour long break), and HOMEWORK!!! already. but the stuff to groan about so far like assignments and having to wake up at unearthly hours 4 times a week all have brighter sides to them.. like how i really like the courses i picked this quarter and how waking up early allows me to see more of what happens in davis in the daytime especially since the sun sets so early.. poo. and long breaks.. during which i either stroll around downtown or go home for lunch. SAVE MONEY. i’m trying to get a part-time job while i’m here.. something not too taxing maybe twice a week couple of hours a day.. minimum wage here is more than twice that in singapore anyway so i’m not complaining (: oh and too bad i don’t have a drivers license, the unitrans buses here are driven by uc davis students! they get paid i think 9.75 USD an hour. i saw a student walking in front of me today and he had a unitrans pin on his bagpack that said “your girlfriend rides my bus” :D

okay so here’s the list of classes i’m taking this quarter:

Introduction to Stars, Galaxies and the Universe

Introductory Companion Animal Biology

Introduction to Acting

Food Science, Folklore and Health

Drama class is mercilessly 8am every monday and wednesday. food is not much better… 9am tuesdays and thursdays. and companion animal has 3 lectures and 1 discussion every week. so its not exactly relaxing like what they say.. although it is alot more interesting than most modules i’ve taken back home (: first acting class we did yoga.. it reminded me of the workshops we used to have back in the good ol’ TSD days.. where everyone wore blacks and did CRAZY things in our studio for 3-4 hours at a go. i’ve a really good feeling about this class..and its also the class where everyone’s most intimate. haven’t gotten to know as many people in the other classes cus they’re all lecture style unlike acting, but what’s SHOCKING is.. notice they’re all SCIENCE classes. hahahaha. albeit mostly introductory non-major courses.. but still. i’m surprising myself at how much im enjoying them.. today in SPACE class (stars, galaxies and universe) the prof was trying to demonstrate how far the next nearest star was to earth compared to how far the sun was to earth. he drew a 1-inch long line on the chalkboard, and said that if that was the distance between the sun and the earth, the entire chalkboard (which was SUPER long) wasn’t enough to cover the distance between the earth and the next nearest star. he then proceeded to unroll a roll of toilet paper and he told us to tell him to stop when we think its the right distance. so he went around the lecture hall, up the stairs, out of the lecture hall, back in through the other door, down the stairs till the toilet paper ran out. and then he said it wasnt even enough so he disappeared into a back room and came out pushing a HUGE cart piled high with cartons of toilet paper and said that’s how much it would take. 1 inch to 5 miles of toiletpaper to get to the next nearest star. so… in conclusion, the universe is unimaginably ginormous. and that’s just one example of the quirky ways he tries to illustrate sciencey things to a lecture hall full of math-phobes (this is a non-major class too so we’re mostly not physics majors..phew). i think he may be the most creative teacher i’ve come across.. surprisingly, in university of all places.

as for animal science, today in discussion we spent an hour debating about animal welfare and animal rights and it got pretty emotional for some people. its a real eye-opener comparing the discussion groups here with the tutorial sessions we have back home. its like wet market v.s. cemetery.. or worse. i’m pretty convinced that its partly got to do with the questions that are being asked. uninteresting questions coupled with a less than enthusiastic singaporean audience.. spells a recipe for silence. anddd… my food science class is pretty interesting too.. he was talking about what made food kosher (and halal) and about tons of weird food around the world…and chinese concepts of yin and yang etc etc. except sometimes i can’t help but cringe a little when the professor makes comments about chinese culture like… in the chinese culture everyone shares food and eats from the same dishes, and it is considered rude and unacceptable if you have a dish to your own (like in western culture). which is… not true. anymore, at least. but i guess stereotypes tend to prevail.. and i can imagine how him saying it in a more extreme way would make it more interesting for the locals. i bet it happens in schools of other cultures too.

other than school, tons of things happened in the past 4 days.. i bought (or should i say, “invested”) in a pair of chestnut brown uggs!! its probably the best thing i’ve bought in a long time.. super warm and snuggly (: i wear them around at home sometimes too when its cold. only thing is alot of people have them and wear them, but i guess BECAUSE they’re so warm and nice. wish they had fleece-lined ugg socks so i could wear them to sleep.. oooh. nice. also, i met a fire-breather called Aries while eating at a tiny bakery that sold pizza made in a brick-fire oven on one of my breaktime strolls. long story, but i was supposed to go watch his fire-dance performance thing outside baskin robbins tonight but i forgot! we had dinner with my Education Abroad Program (EAP) buddy chelsea and weifen’s buddy amy at burgers and brew.. had a great time chatting with them and the food was yum yum yummy. i had.. an avocado cheese burger with chilli fries (: (: (: amy offered to drive us to the ikea at sacremento on saturday after we go to the farmer’s market in the morning! awesome possum. and i think annie and lauren are coming to davis this weekend for some party so rochelle suggested we all go to sacramento on sunday!

OH!! right. weifen and i signed up for Introdutory Cross Country Skiing today.. the trip’s on the 31st of january. hee hee!! excitement excitement.. so this weekend’s sacramento, and probably one of the next 2 weekends san francisco (if rochelle goes home and gives us a ride), and then the last week of january SKIING!

tomorrow’s friday, the only day i get to sleep in since class is from 2.10-3pm.. wish i didnt have class on fridays though! can travel more on long weekends!! i shall go check the airticket prices to hawaii (apparently its cheaper from vegas to hawaii) and MAYBE go during springbreak :D if i have enough money. i need to BABYSIT. or something! though i can’t think of anyone who’d want to trust a foreign exchange student with no babysitting experience and no social security number with their kid.

off to shower now! showering is DAMN shiok here.. cus the water is burning hot. i never feel like getting out of the shower.. except when my skin turns an unhealthy shade of red. freaky i know. but SHIOK (:

goodnight!
